    What's the story

On Friday, IIT-Delhi announced that it had decided to slash tuition fees for foreign students.

The premier engineering institute said that it had come to a decision wherein fees for undergraduate foreign students would be slashed by 31%, while tuition fees for foreign doctorate students would be cut by a whopping 96%.

    Here are the details.

Under the revised free structure, undergraduate foreign students at IIT-Delhi will be charged Rs. 200,000 per annum, down from Rs. 290,000 earlier.

Meanwhile, foreign students pursuing a PhD will have to pay as little as Rs. 10,000 per annum - a massive reduction from the Rs. 290,000 per annum they were required to pay earlier.

IIT-Delhi wants a global standing with more foreign students

The move comes as part of IIT-Delhi's efforts to attract more foreign students and transform the institute to one of global excellence.

At present only 1% of IIT-Delhi students are foreigners.

The move is also significant, considering that IITs were planning to double tuition fees for foreign students from the current $4,000 per annum to $8,000 per annum, keeping in line with global trends.
