    What's the story

The Union cabinet yesterday approved a proposal for setting up the Center for Disability Sports at Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, to be registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.

The setting up of the center shall entail an estimated cost of Rs. 170.99 crore over a period of five years.

The center will ensure the effective participation of persons with disabilities in sports activities.

    Statement

Center will enable disabled persons to compete at international level

Improved sports infrastructure created by the center will not only ensure effective participation but also enable them to compete at national and international levels.

Setting up of the Disability Sports center will also develop a sense of belonging in 'Divyangjan' (persons with special abilities) to facilitate their integration in society, an official statement said.

There will be a governing body of members for supervision.

    Supervision

A governing body of 12 members will supervise the center

The governing body of members, not exceeding 12, will be there for overall superintendence and supervision of the center.

Among the members of the body there will be some serving in ex-officio capacity and others coming in as experts from the National Level Sports Federations apart from experts in para games.

Currently, no specialized sports training facilities for Divyangjan are available in the country.

    Details

Center being set up under section 30 of RPwD Act

The official statement further said that this void is proposed to be filled by setting up such sports infrastructure so that persons with disabilities can undergo rigorous and specialized training.

Section 30 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, states that the government should take measures to ensure effective participation of Persons with Disabilities in sports activities.
