    Famous Indian chartered accountants who turned politicians

    What's the story

    Chartered Accountancy (CA) opens various avenues for people after they have completed the course successfully.

    While some opt to become auditors, others choose to be in financial management.

    However, today, we will be talking about some successful CA practitioners in India who later joined politics to serve the country.

    Here are five of them.

    Union Minister Suresh Prabhu is a Fellow Chartered Accountant

    Union Minister Suresh Prabhu is a Fellow Chartered Accountant from ICAI Delhi. Notably, he secured the All-India Rank of 11 in his CA exams.

    He joined Shiv Sena in 1996 but later quit the party to join BJP in 2014.

    Prabhu was earlier the Union Minister of Power and Railways. He is currently the Minister of Commerce and Industry as well as Civil Aviation.

    Union Minister Piyush Goyal is also a Chartered Accountant

    Union Minister Piyush Goyal is one of the most famous CAs turned politicians. He is currently the Minister of Railways and Coal. He was earlier the Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy.

    Goyal has also had a strong academic record. He was all India second rank holder in CA exams. He was also second rank holder in Law at Mumbai University.

    Veteran politician K Rahman Khan is a Fellow Chartered Accountant

    Veteran politician and senior Congress leader K Rahman Khan is also a Fellow Chartered Accountant of ICAI.

    The Congress leader from Karnataka is a former Union Minister of Minority Affairs (during 2012-14). He was also a Member of Parliament of Rajya Sabha for Karnataka who was elected for four terms (1993-2018).

    Khan had also served as the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha (2004-12).

    SAD parliamentarian Naresh Gujral is also an FCA

    Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party politician and parliamentarian, Naresh Gujral, is also a Fellow Chartered Accountant from ICAI, Delhi.

    He is the son of former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral. He is currently a Member of Parliament of the Rajya Sabha. He assumed office in April 2010 and represents Punjab in the upper house of the Indian Parliament.

    BJP leader Kirit Somaiya is also a Chartered Accountant who graduated from the ICAI in 1979. The Mumbai BJP leader used to represent the Mumbai North-East constituency in the 16th Lok Sabha; he was elected from the same seat to the 13th Lok Sabha too.
