    What's the story

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has swung into action against Fahim Khan, prime accused in the recent Nagpur violence.

On Monday, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation crew demolished the two-story residence of Khan in Sanjay Bagh Colony, Yashodhara Nagar, using three JCB machines.

The demolition was conducted amid heavy police cover and drone monitoring.

A civic source said the property was registered in Khan's mother's name on NIT-leased land.

    Property issues

Lease expiration and lack of approval

The lease for the property on which Khan's house stood had expired in 2020.

Before the demolition, the NMC had served a notice to Khan, citing various lapses, including lack of approval for the building plan.

But the demolition notice was issued a mere 24 hours before the operation started on Monday morning.

    Arrest details

    Khan's role in Nagpur violence

Khan, Minority Democratic Party (MDP) head, has been booked under sedition. He is among more than 100 people arrested for the March 17 violence.

He is presently in jail in connection with the continuing investigations into the clashes.

The Nagpur violence was sparked by a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)-led protest seeking the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

During the protest, Khan is alleged to have instigated violence by spreading false rumors about desecration of a holy book.

    Measures

    Government's response to the violence

The violence led to extensive stone-pelting and arson, injuring 33 cops, including three Deputy Commissioner of Police-rank officers.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has said the cost of properties damaged in the Nagpur violence would be recovered from the culprits.

He warned non-payment would lead to seizure and sale of their properties.

CM Fadnavis also promised a thorough probe into the issue, ensuring stern action against those guilty of inciting violence or assaulting police officers.
