The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has taken charge of the security arrangements at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. On August 9, a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered in the hospital premises, sparking nationwide outrage. SC expresses concern over hospital vandalism
The Supreme Court expressed its inability to understand why the state was unprepared for the incident of vandalism at the hospital. The court observed that many doctors have left the campus following the mob violence. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had assured that central forces would guard the premises, a move not opposed by Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal representing West Bengal government.

The brutal rape and murder of the doctor has sparked widespread protests across India, with healthcare workers demanding justice for their colleague. These protests have significantly disrupted outpatient services and routine surgeries in government hospitals nationwide. The most prominent demonstrations were seen in Delhi and Kolkata—which became focal points of protest. The protesting doctors are calling for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the incident and urgent implementation of central law to safeguard healthcare workers from violence.

Meanwhile, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, is undergoing questioning by the CBI in connection with the crime. Additionally, the Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations of financial irregularities during Ghosh's tenure as principal.
