    What's the story

Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy, recently shared his disappointment with the 2008 sequel to his film franchise, Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

In a conversation with Screen Rant about his forthcoming documentary Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, he revealed that his three-month collaboration with director Guillermo del Toro had little influence on the final product.

"I came off that and was really unhappy with the second movie," he said.

    Creative dissatisfaction

Mignola's creative control and perspective on 'Hellboy II'

Mignola expressed his preference for working independently, stating, "I like being left alone to produce work that I can control."

"I just had my problems with the film, and coming off that film, I remember thinking, 'Man, if I had spent those three months that I did in pre-production in my studio, I would've produced a comic or two that would be exactly what I wanted them to be.'"

    Divergent experiences

Mignola's contrasting experiences with 1st and 2nd 'Hellboy' films

Mignola contrasted his experiences working on the first and second Hellboy movies.

"The first movie I have no problem with because that was exciting and an adventure, and that was all new. Figuring out how to make a Hellboy movie — that was all exciting," he said.

"The second movie was a very different experience. I've made my peace with it, but for a while, I grudged the time I spent on it. But our relationship survived, so that's nice."

    New project

Mignola's involvement in the upcoming 'Hellboy: The Crooked Man'

In more positive news, Mignola is associated with the upcoming film Hellboy: The Crooked Man.

He co-wrote the screenplay with director Brian Taylor.

The film, set to premiere later this year, features Jack Kesy as the third actor to portray Hellboy after Ron Perlman and David Harbour.

Other cast members include Adeline Rudolph, Martin Bassindale, Jefferson White, Joseph Marcell, Leah McNamara, and Hannah Margetson.
