    What's the story

Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein is set for a fresh rape trial as announced by the prosecutors of his New York case.

This development comes on the heels of his 2020 conviction overturned last week.

"We believe in this case, and we will be retrying this case," stated the prosecutors during the initial hearing.

Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg emphasized that it remains a strong case just as it was in 2020.

The trial could commence in September.

    Defense stance

'His life is on the line'

Arthur Aidala, Weinstein's lead attorney, said, "We are happy to hear that the prosecutors want a speedy trial. It's a new trial, it's a new day...his life is on the line."

Weinstein was present in court when the Manhattan District Attorney's office's representatives announced their plan to retry the case.

The former film mogul faced arrest and charges of rape in May 2018 following a New York Times exposé on years of alleged abuse and assaults by him.

    Past convictions

Weinstein's 2020 conviction and subsequent developments

In February 2020, Weinstein was found guilty on charges of first-degree sexual assault and third-degree rape following accusations by Mimi Haley and Jessica Mann.

Despite his conviction being overturned recently, his release is not imminent due to a separate 2022 conviction on sex crimes in Los Angeles, resulting in a 16-year sentence.

The former film mogul is expected to stay in New York City in preparation for the new trial.

Moreover, Mann was present in the court during the proceedings.

    Retrial determination

Manhattan DA's office expressed resolve to retry the case

The Manhattan District Attorney's office has expressed a firm resolve to retry Weinstein's case.

"We will do everything in our power to retry this case, and remain steadfast in our commitment to survivors of sexual assault," they stated.

Haley, one of Weinstein's accusers, voiced her distress at the overturning of his conviction but also her readiness to testify again if required.

The subsequent hearing is slated for May 29, with Weinstein (72) expected to attend amid his ongoing health problems.

    Career and downfall

The rise and fall of Weinstein

Weinstein is the co-founder of Miramax, which has produced Hollywood movies such as Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), Pulp Fiction (1994), and Shakespeare in Love (1998).

The latter won him an Oscar.

The allegations of sexual abuse against him first surfaced in 2017, leading to his expulsion from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Reportedly, over 70 women have accused him over the years, and it was the crusade against him that ignited the #MeToo movement in Hollywood.
