Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga join cast of 'The Sopranos' prequel
The Sopranos is getting a prequel movie after the HBO show wowed audience with a humane portrayal of a New Jersey mobster who tried to live the American dream. We had reported about the plot of the movie as disclosed by show-maker David Chase. Now, it has been revealed that Jon Bernthal and Vera Farmiga are on board for the film. Here's more.
The plot is based on interracial riots in 1960s
Titled The Many Saints of Newark, the film is based on the riots in the 1960s. The violence broke out between Italians and African Americans in Newark and the upcoming prequel will show how it got lethal between gangsters of each ethnic group. While not much is known, Chase revealed that he plans to show young Tony Soprano growing up amid this violence.
Alessandro Nivola as Dickie Moltisanti will be Tony's mentor
Most of the details about the show are still under wraps. However, we know Alessandro Nivola is on board to play Dickie Moltisanti, who will act as a mentor to young Tony. Notably, Dickie is Christopher's father who Tony, in turn, takes under his wing in the Sopranos show. Nivola will now be joined by Farmiga and Bernthal, though their roles remain unknown.
Young Tony will have plenty of role models in movie
Apart from Dickie, Tony will also come under the influence of his tough father, Johnny Boy, a mob soldier and his uncle, Junior Soprano. These influences will be instrumental in shaping Tony as the mobster we saw on the show.
Where else can we see Farmiga and Bernthal?
Before Farmiga and Bernthal appear in the upcoming prequel, to be directed by Alan Taylor of Lost, The Sopranos fame, the stars have notable projects lined up. Farmiga, for her part, will appear in Godzilla: King of the Monsters by Legendary Pictures on May 31, while Bernthal will be hitting the screens this January 18 in the second season of Netflix's The Punisher.
