'The Gorge': Writer teases franchise plans for Anya Taylor-Joy's film

    What's the story

Zach Dean, the writer of the newly released film The Gorge, spoke about the project in an interview with Comic Book.

He said that he wrote the script between April and September 2020—a time when the world was uncertain about the pandemic.

The Gorge, starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, is currently streaming on Apple TV+.

It is directed by Scott Derrickson.

    Expansion ideas

Dean's future plans for 'The Gorge'

Dean expressed his interest in expanding The Gorge's universe.

"I have an idea for a prequel. I have ideas for both [prequel and sequel]."

"Because I've had a certain amount of success with original material, which is hard to do, and I've had a lot of original movies made, is that I want to make original franchises."

"I want there to be another Gorge. I love writing original stuff and I've been really grateful to have some success with it."

    Love and loneliness

'The Gorge': A love story born from isolation

The Gorge tells the tale of two operatives, played by Teller and Taylor-Joy, stationed in guard towers on opposite sides of a classified gorge.

They bond while defending against an unseen enemy.

Dean revealed he conceived the idea for this film one night in his office, drawing a gorge with two towers and writing "snipers."

"It's a love story about two people who think they are essentially alone in the world, no one will ever understand them."

    Love versus unknown

Dean's writing process during the pandemic

Dean explained his process during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I was so freaked out. And then when I was done freaking out, I was like, 'Well, the one thing I know to do is what I've always loved to do, which is I can write original stories."

"I started in April and I went into honestly, probably the most prolific window of writing I've had in my whole career where I wrote three movies in like six months."
