What we learned from 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' trailer

    What's the story

The first trailer and poster for 'Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi' was unveiled on Friday at the Star Wars Celebration fan event in Florida.

The much-anticipated Rian Johnson-directed film sees the return of 'The Force Awakens' stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adam Driver and most importantly Mark Hamill.

Here's five things we learned about the upcoming film from its trailer.

    Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker has a major role

In 'The Force Awakens', we only got a fleeting glimpse of Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill).

'The Last Jedi's' trailer indicates that fans will finally get the Luke Skywalker-centered film they missed out on in the previous film.

Skywalker appears to have a more Yoda-like role of training Rey (Daisy Ridley) on the ways of the force.

    Titled explained

Luke Skywalker feels "it's time for the Jedi to end"

Far from training a new generation of Jedi to counter the First Order, Luke concludes, "I only know one truth, it's time for the Jedi to end."

By saying this, is Luke simply sulking about his apprentice Ben Solo turning to the Dark Side and becoming Kylo Ren? Or does he mean it?

Why must the Jedi end? Why Luke… Why!

    Captain Phasma

    The dreaded Captain Phasma returns

In 'The Force Awakens', the dreaded chrome-plated behemoth Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) was seen about to be dumped down a rubbish chute.

But in the upcoming film, she has returned and is seen burning down a building Luke deeply cares about.

Could it be the lost Jedi temple Luke was seeking? Or is this some sort of a flashback?

    Kylo Ren

Has Kylo Ren ditched his mask for good?

In the previous film, Kylo Ren never put his mask back on after removing it and killing his father Han.

The trailer shows Ren's Vaderesque mask crushed to oblivion.

This feeds into speculation that the new film trilogy will follow Kylo Ren/Ben Solo's journey to the light from the dark side.

He's still largely going to remain the main antagonist of 'The Last Jedi'.

    Leia

Carrie Fisher's General Leia Organa to have major role

It remains unclear how Disney and LucasFilm will fit in Carrie Fisher's sad demise into Episode IX.

She makes an appearance in the trailer, indicating that she'll have an important part in the story, a fact filmmakers have confirmed.

Fisher had finished shooting all her scenes for the film before her death.

'The Last Jedi' would likely be a tearful tribute to Fisher.
