    What's the story

Sean Baker's dark romantic comedy, Anora, has witnessed a massive spike in its box office earnings after its triumph at the 97th Academy Awards.

The film's earnings skyrocketed by 144% after it bagged five Oscars on Sunday (March 2), including a Best Actress win for Mikey Madison and Best Director for Baker.

The boost pushed collections past the $1,31,000 mark on Monday—the highest since November.

    Film overview

    'Anora' plot and cast details

Anora narrates the tale of a New York City stripper who becomes romantically involved with a Russian oligarch who promises her respect and wealth but instead brings chaos into her life.

The film features Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, Darya Ekamasova, and Aleksei Serebryakov, along with Madison.

In her Academy Award acceptance speech, Madison expressed gratitude to the sex worker community for inspiring the film's story.

    Film's journey

'Anora' premiered at Cannes, earned $41 million worldwide

Anora first premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, where it bagged the prestigious Palme d'Or.

The film was released theatrically by Neon in October and has since grossed $41 million worldwide on a modest $6 million budget. This makes Anora Baker's highest-grossing film to date.

The film was recognized as one of the top 10 films of 2024 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute.

    Director's speech

Baker's historic win and call for more indie films

Baker also made history at the Oscars by becoming the first person to win four awards for a single film in a year, equaling Walt Disney's 1953 record.

However, unlike Disney, who won for four different films, all of Baker's wins were for Anora.

In his acceptance speech, Baker expressed gratitude to Quentin Tarantino for casting Madison in Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood, adding that without her role in that film, "there would be no Anora."
