    What's the story

The 1966 cinematic masterpiece Nayak, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Satyajit Ray, will be re-released in theaters on February 21.

The announcement was made by PVR Cinemas through their official social media handles.

The restored version of the film will be screened in 2K resolution with English subtitles at PVR INOX theaters.

    Film details

'Nayak' features Ray's second original screenplay

Nayak, which first premiered on May 6, 1966, is also Ray's second original screenplay after the 1962 movie Kanchenjungha.

The movie stars veteran actors Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore in lead roles.

The supporting cast includes Bireswar Sen, Soumen Bose, Nirmal Ghosh, Premangshu Bose, Jogesh Chatterjee, and Sumita Sanyal.

    Plot synopsis

'Nayak' explores the life of a celebrated actor

The story of Nayak revolves around Arindam Mukherjee (Kumar), a popular Bengali film star who boards a train from Kolkata to Delhi to receive an award.

On the journey, he meets a young journalist Aditi Sengupta (Tagore).

As Mukherjee narrates his life story to Sengupta, he unwittingly reveals his past mistakes, insecurities, and regrets.

    Career progression

Ray and Kumar's subsequent collaboration post 'Nayak'

Following Nayak, Ray and Kumar teamed up again for another project, Chiriyakhana (1967).

In this film, Kumar played the iconic Bengali detective Byomkesh Bakshi, a character created by Bengali novelist Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay.

Bankim Ghosh, Nripati Chattopadhyay, and Chinmoy Ray were also a part of the cast ensemble.
