Salman firing case: Bombay HC demands update on accused's death

    What's the story

The Bombay High Court has asked for an update on the investigation into the alleged suicide of Anuj Thapan, a suspect in the Salman Khan firing case.

Thapan was discovered dead in a Mumbai Crime Branch restroom on May 1.

The court has also ordered the preservation of CCTV footage from the police station and call records of involved officers.

Justices Sandeep Marne and Neela Gokhale stated that they cannot "blindly" transfer the case to another agency without receiving updates.

    Allegations raised

His mother alleged foul play in his death

Rita Devi, Thapan's mother, has alleged foul play in her son's death, suspecting murder.

She submitted a plea stating that Thapan suffered physical abuse and torture while in police custody.

Devi has urged the court to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe into her son's death.

However, an accidental death report was lodged and the investigation was handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on May 3.

    Case background

Firing incident took place last month

On April 14, two men fired a few gunshots outside the Bollywood superstar's Bandra residence, shocking the country.

Six individuals have been arrested in connection with the shooting, including Lawrence Bishnoi, currently detained in Sabarmati Central Prison in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and his younger brother Anmol Bishnoi.

Devi's legal representatives have pushed for transferring the inquiry to CBI, noting that it has been 14 days since Thapan's death.

    Conspiracy

    Earlier, Anmol shouldered the blame

On April 14 itself, Anmol claimed the responsibility of the attack through a social media post that said, "After this, bullets won't miss your empty house."

The brothers' ire stems from the infamous 1998 incident involving Khan's alleged hunting of a blackbuck—an act deemed disrespectful to the Bishnoi community.

Meanwhile, in a recent update, The All India Bishnoi Society stated, "If Salman himself apologizes, the Bishnoi society will consider the apology."

    Work

Khan will next be seen in 'Sikandar'

Coming to Khan's work front, he was last seen in Tiger 3 in 2023.

Up next, he is committed to AR Murugadoss's Sikandar, which will hit theaters next year.

Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, it also stars Rashmika Mandanna.

On the other hand, uncertainty abounds regarding his hosting duties for Bigg Boss OTT 3, which will stream later this year on JioCinema.
