Rishi Kapoor feared 'Saawariya' would ruin Ranbir's career, reveals Bhansali

    What's the story

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the acclaimed director, who helmed the 2007 film Saawariya, recently opened up about how the late actor Rishi Kapoor was initially upset and angry about his son Ranbir Kapoor's debut film.

The movie, which also marked Sonam Kapoor Ahuja's entry into Bollywood, celebrated its 17th anniversary on Saturday.

Speaking to Zoom, Bhansali revealed that Rishi thought Saawariya would destroy Ranbir's career.

    Film secrecy

Bhansali kept Rishi in the dark about 'Saawariya'

Bhansali kept Saawariya under wraps, not showing a single frame of the film to anyone before its release. Not even Rishi, who kept asking for a preview.

The director would reply to Neetu Kapoor (Ranbir's mother) about a film screening, saying it wasn't ready yet.

When Rishi finally saw the film, he was "stumped and angry," Bhansali revealed.

Despite his initial anger, Rishi eventually admitted that he had misjudged Saawariya.

    Praise

SLB praised his 'amazing team of actors'

Bhansali revealed the veteran actor wasn't the only one who criticized the film.

"Many critics and cineastes were puzzled with what I tried to do in Saawariya. The language of expression, the texture of storytelling, and the performances were all unique."

"I had an amazing team of actors. Ranbir, Sonam surrendered completely to my vision. They were like clay being molded into beautiful shapes."

    Director's pride

Bhansali wouldn't change anything about 'Saawariya'

Additionally, Bhansali said he was proud of the film and its cast, adding he wouldn't change anything about Saawariya if he were to make it today.

"I am so proud of where Ranbir has reached. And I had two legendary performers Begum Para and Zohra Sehgal in my film."

He cheekily added, "I wouldn't change anything. Except for one actor. I am not telling you which."
