    What's the story

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has initiated legal proceedings against a deepfake video that falsely depicts him endorsing a political party.

The AI-created video—which manipulated footage from Singh's recent appearance at a Varanasi fashion event—widely spread on social media platforms.

Despite its realistic look, the audio was an AI-generated voice clone of the actor.

Recently, his representative confirmed that a formal complaint had been lodged against the creators of the deepfake video.

    Context

    Why does this story matter?

The misuse of deepfake technology is not limited to Singh.

Other Bollywood celebrities, including Aamir Khan and Rashmika Mandanna, have also been victims of similar fake videos on social media.

In response to his own manipulated video, Khan's spokesperson stated that the actor has never publicly supported any political party in his 35-year career.

The case involving Singh's deepfake clip is currently under investigation by the Cyber Crime Cell.

    Statement

Legal proceedings and actions against the creators of deepfake

Singh's representative confirmed that legal action had been initiated.

In an official statement, they said, "Yes, we have filed the police complaint and FIR has been lodged against the handle that was promoting the AI-generated deepfake video of Mr. Ranveer Singh."

In a similar incident, Khan's video seemingly depicted him endorsing a particular political party and cautioning against insincere promises, known as "jumlas."

    Public caution

Singh warned fans about deepfake dangers on Instagram

In response to the manipulated video, Singh warned his followers about the potential dangers of deepfake technology via Instagram.

He posted a message in capital letters on his Instagram Story: "Deepfake se bacho dostonnnn (skull emoji), (Beware of Deepfakes, friends)."

The original footage used in the deepfake video was from Singh's participation in a fashion show with Kriti Sanon for designer Manish Malhotra in Varanasi.

    Fan reaction

Deepfake misuse sparked outrage among Singh's fans

The misuse of Singh's footage to create an AI-manipulated video promoting a political party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections has sparked outrage among his fans.

Despite the controversy, Singh continues to focus on his professional commitments. He is currently preparing for the release of Singham Again, a film featuring a star-studded cast including his wife Deepika Padukone, Ajay Devgn, Arjun Kapoor, and Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Additionally, he is set to appear in Don 3, alongside Kiara Advani.
