    What's the story

Hansal Mehta's upcoming Mahatma Gandhi biopic—titled Gandhi—by Applause Entertainment has elevated excitement levels by recently casting Bhamini Oza in a pivotal role.

Oza, the wife of lead actor Pratik Gandhi, is set to portray the character of Kasturba in the series.

Expressing his excitement about this development, Gandhi joyfully shared his thoughts on collaborating with his wife in a recent interview, stating, "I'm absolutely thrilled."

    Actor's reaction

'I have always felt she is a terrific actor': Gandhi

In a conversation with Times Now, the actor expressed, "I have seen her working hard all these years and patiently preparing and waiting for that one big break. I have always felt she is a terrific actor."

"I have seen a lot of her work in stage. I love her both in dramatic roles and comedy."

Notably, Oza is recognized for her roles in Ziddi Dil Maane Na (2021), Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery (2023), and Ishq Fitoori, per IMDb.

    Past work

    Couple's previous collaboration on 'Shimmy'

Gandhi and Oza have previously shared both stage and screen space. They worked together on a short film titled Shimmy, which is available on Amazon's miniTV. This marked their first joint appearance on screen.

Sharing insights about their experience together, he stated, "What made it really special for me was that my wife and I were seen on screen together in this so I was excited."

Notably, the duo tied the knot in 2009 and have one child.

    About the project

Meanwhile, this project marks the third collaboration between Mehta-Gandhi

This project signifies the third collaboration between Mehta and Gandhi, following their success with the hit web series Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story and Modern Love Mumbai.

Intriguingly, this isn't Gandhi's first portrayal of the Mahatma.

He previously depicted the iconic figure in Manoj Shah's Gujarati play Mohan No Masalo.

However, director Mehta clarified that Gandhi's previous experience with the role was not the sole reason for his casting in the upcoming web series.

    Inspiration

Web series adapted from Ramachandra Guha's books

The show is said to be based on historian Ramachandra Guha's books Gandhi Before India and Gandhi: The Years That Changed The World.

These books offer a thorough account of Gandhi's life, from his early years in India to his time in South Africa and his return to lead India's fight for independence.

The show is set to be filmed in multiple locations, including India, South Africa, and England.
