    Disney has released an extended preview of Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to the 2019 live-action photorealistic reimagining of The Lion King.

    The film, directed by Oscar Award-winning Barry Jenkins, delves into the early years of Mufasa and his younger brother Scar.

    The trailer was unveiled at the D23 event on Saturday (local time), offering fans a glimpse into the sibling rivalry that shapes the iconic story.

    The newly released trailer highlights the evolution of the relationship between Mufasa and Scar, from siblings to adversaries.

    This transformation is a key element in the narrative of The Lion King, and the prequel promises to provide deeper insights into their dynamic.

    The film reunites Jenkins with his regular team, including composer Nicholas Britell, editor Joi McMillon, and cinematographer James Laxton.

    Cast details

    Film features new and returning cast members

    Mufasa features Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr as the voices of young Mufasa and Scar respectively.

    These characters were previously voiced by James Earl Jones (Mufasa) and Jeremy Irons (Scar) in the 1994 original film, and reprised by Jones and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the 2019 remake.

    Beyoncé will return to voice Nala, while her daughter Blue Ivy Carter will play Kiara, the daughter of King Samba and Queen Nala.

    Director Jenkins shared his connection with 'The Lion King'

    Before the trailer's release, a snippet of the film's opening song was teased by singers.

    Jenkins then took to the stage to share his connection with The Lion King, saying, "Like all of you, The Lion King made an indelible mark on me. Telling his story is an absolute honor."

    He also revealed that Lin-Manuel Miranda will be writing the film's original songs. Notably, Miranda's I Always Wanted a Brother received a standing ovation.

    Mufasa: The Lion King is set to hit theaters on December 20.

    This prequel follows the 2019 remake of The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau, which was a global success.

    The film earned a staggering $1.66B and became one of seven Disney films to cross the billion-dollar mark that year.

    Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the prequel, which promises to delve deeper into the iconic story.
