Inside Sebastian Stan's unbelievable transformation for 'A Different Man'

Sebastian Stan, best known for his role as Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has undergone a dramatic transformation for his latest film, A Different Man.
The movie features Stan as Edward, a character suffering from neurofibromatosis. This genetic disorder results in the growth of tumors on the skin and bones.
The actor's transformation was achieved through extensive makeup and prosthetics.

The process behind Stan's transformation
The transformation of Stan was a complex process, led by two-time Oscar-nominated makeup artist Mike Marino.
In a conversation with Variety, Marino explained used 3D scans of Stan's head and a 3D-printed version of it for reference. He also used a scan and 3D print of Adam Pearson's face, who plays Oswald in the film.
"I warned him. I said 'we're going to coat your entire head hair and everything with glue and it's going to be hot and uncomfortable."
Stages
Marino's makeup went through 4 different stages
Marino's makeup process for Stan involved four different stages. Initially, he intensified the paint job and added scabs and flaky skin pieces.
Later, Edward's skin became so scabby that it could be stretched.
Marino then used a soft makeup cast and glued it onto Stan. This created a secondary design where the face was slightly Sebastian and slightly Edward.
"It was about a two-hour process of gluing him into this makeup."
Real-life experience
Stan's experience living in the makeup
Stan had to spend hours in the makeup before going to set. During this time, he experienced what it was like to live with a visible difference.
"On Broadway, one of the busiest streets in New York, no one's looking at me. It's as if I'm not even there," Stan shared.
He also mentioned instances where people would stop, point, and take pictures of him.
Film's message
Marino hopes 'A Different Man' changes perceptions of beauty
Marino expressed his hope that A Different Man will change people's perceptions of beauty.
"With makeup, we can take it off, and peel it off. Adam can't. There is this real amazing beauty to someone who has that appearance, who cannot be like everyone else," he said.
He emphasized the importance of viewing beauty differently, focusing on a person's soul and who they are.
The film is directed by Aaron Schimberg.
