'House of the Dragon': 'GoT' prequel getting released in August
What's the story
The prequel to Game of Thrones (GoT), House of the Dragon finally gets a release date.
The spin-off series will debut on HBO and HBO Max on August 21.
The date was announced on Wednesday alongside a photo of a golden dragon egg hatching under the watchful eyes of a fully grown dragon.
The series is based on George RR Martin's Fire & Blood.
Context
Why does this story matter?
House of the Dragon was announced in October 2019, shortly after the disappointing GoT finale, so a lot is riding on it.
But, it would not have a smooth OTT run, as it faces tough clash with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power that premieres on Amazon Prime Video on September 2.
The episodes will be released on a weekly basis.

The picture that the makers shared along with the announcement indicates that stellar dragon-related action is in the offering.
Set 300 years before the main series, House of the Dragon will focus on the Targaryen family and the events that eventually lead to the civil war, also called the Dance of the Dragons.
Martin and Ryan J Condal (Colony) are co-creating the show.

Along with the release date, makers also shared almost 10 character posters.
Characters like King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy), Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), Lord Corlys Velaryon & Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Steve Toussaint and D'Arcy), and Young Rhaenyra & Young Alicent (Milly Alcock and Emily Carey), got their posters.

Miguel Sapochnik, who had helmed GoT, is the show runner along with Condal.
They are also executive producers of the series, along with Martin, Vince Gerardis, Sara Hess, Jocelyn Diaz, Ron Schmidt, Clare Kilner, Geeta V. Patel, and Greg Yaitanes.
Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Ryan Corr, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Graham McTavish, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson, and Gavin Spokes, round up the cast.
