    What's the story

Actor Divya Dutta has defended her co-star Rashmika Mandanna after she was criticized for her performance in the historical action film Chhaava.

Although the film is doing well at the box office, a section of the audience is unhappy with Mandanna's portrayal of Maharani Yesubai Bhonsale.

Speaking to India Today Digital, Dutta called Mandanna an "incredible actor" and emphasized her past successes.

The film is headlined by Vicky Kaushal.

    Actor's defense

Dutta praised Mandanna's acting skills and professionalism

Defending Mandanna, Dutta said, "Although we didn't have scenes together, I believe she is an incredible actor. If you look at her kohl-rimmed eyes in certain scenes, they are simply mesmerizing."

"Let's not forget that she has delivered several hits, which clearly means she has something that resonates with the audience. From what I know, she is a hardworking and genuinely sweet person."

    Box office success

'Chhaava' continues to dominate box office despite criticism

"The thing is, everyone will have a different opinion."

"Whether it's for me or Rashmika, we gave our best, others did their part, and now the audience is doing theirs. What truly matters is that the film is performing well and is among the biggest blockbusters of the year—we should celebrate that."

It has become 2025's biggest blockbuster yet, overtaking Akshay Kumar's Sky Force with a worldwide collection of ₹338 crore in just eight days.

    Film details

    Dutta's role and 'Chhaava's plot

In Chhaava, Dutta essays Rajmata Soyrabai Bhosale.

The film chronicles Shivaji Maharaj's son Sambhaji's ascension to the throne and his attempts to keep his father's dream of Swarajya alive against the Mughal dynasty, headed by Aurangzeb.

Yesubai, played by Mandanna, is revered for her contributions to the Maratha kingdom in her husband's absence.

Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, the film is an adaptation of the Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant.
