    What's the story

The trailer of Akshay Kumar-starrer 'Toilet: Ek Prem Katha' is out and it seems to have impressed Bollywood, the critics, and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The film spreads awareness about the importance of toilets at home and battles against open defecation, syncing with 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'.

The trailer has already garnered 20 million views; the film releases on 11 August.

    Data

    A moment of pride

It was a moment of pride for the team of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Good effort to further the message of cleanliness. 125 crore Indians have to continue working together to create a Swachh Bharat."

    Bigger picture

Akshay hopes to succeed in changing mindsets

Akshay Kumar hopes to truly make a difference with 'Toilet', which marks Bhumi's second film.

'Toilet' highlights rural people's daily struggles for not having access to basic necessities.

The National Award-winning actor has been delivering films with promising content of late.

His next film 'Padman' is reportedly a biopic on Padma Shri recipient Arunachalam Muruganantham, the inventor of low-cost sanitary napkin making machine.

    Details

Trailer reflects the importance of toilets

'Toilet' deals with the story of Keshav (Akshay) and Jaya (Bhumi Pednekar), who fall in love and are soon married.

The first day after the marriage, Jaya is introduced to the "lota party" as her in-laws' house doesn't have a toilet.

She leaves Keshav who then decides to build toilets and stop open defecation in an attempt to win her back.

    Film battles old societal norms

The trailer promises that the film challenges old societal norms. When Jaya leaves Keshav, he struggles to change his father's mindset who believes that the sacred plant 'Tulsi' and a toilet cannot exist in the same premises.

    Truth

Based on true incidents, says the trailer

Looks like 'Toilet' is inspired by the story of a bride Priyanka Bharti who left her in-laws' house the first day after marriage in 2012.

She reached her marital home in UP's Maharajganj district only to find that it didn't have a toilet.

Deciding to walk out, she launched a movement to ensure proper sanitation for women in her village and the nearby ones.

    Data

    No brides for toilet-less houses

"No toilet, no bride." This is what 1,200 residents of 110 villages across Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh decided to curb open defecation in Feb'17. Participating in a Tiwara village Panchayat, near Gurugram, they decided to not marry their daughters into households without toilets.
