Donald Trump concludes legal dispute with X over account suspension

    What's the story

US President Donald Trump has settled his legal battle with X after he was suspended from the platform in the aftermath of the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

The case was settled, according to a court filing. However, the terms of the settlement have not been revealed.

Neither Trump's attorney John Coale nor representatives for X—(formerly Twitter before Elon Musk's takeover)—have commented on the matter.

    Professional ties

Trump's relationship with Musk and other settlements

Trump shares a close professional relationship with Musk, who was a major donor to his campaign and is now an adviser in his administration.

Since his re-election, Trump has also resolved feuds with other tech and media companies.

In December, ABC News agreed to pay $15 million to settle a lawsuit accusing anchor George Stephanopoulos of defaming him.

In January, Meta Platforms Inc. reached a $25 million settlement to settle a lawsuit by Trump.

The legal action came after his suspension from Facebook after the Capitol attack.

When first deplatformed by X, Facebook, and Google, Trump had sought monetary damages and assurances that other users wouldn't be subjected to similar bans or restrictions from these tech giants.

    Social transition

    Trump's shift to Truth Social

After his deplatforming, Trump moved his social media presence to his own network, Truth Social.

Although the bans were lifted by all three companies, the move had already been made.

In 2021, a San Francisco federal judge ruled against Trump in his case against Twitter. The judge said the company did not violate constitutional free-speech rights when suspending accounts for violating its terms of service.
