Baba Ramdev's Patanjali working on power generation using bulls

    What's the story

After FMCG, Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Ayurved is reportedly eyeing to enter the power generation sector.

Baba Ramdev and Patanjali co-founder Acharya Balkrishna are working on bull power, generating electricity using bulls.

The idea, a brainchild of Balkrishna, was generated after one-and-half years of research.

The aim of the research is to ensure bulls do not end up in slaughterhouses.

    Introduction

    About Patanjali Ayurved

Patanjali Ayurved was founded by Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev and his associate Acharya Balkrishna in 2006 and has grown exponentially ever since.

It was set up with an aim of establishing Ayurveda in accordance and coordination with ancient wisdom and latest technology.

It has become India's third-largest FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) player, surpassing companies like Godrej, Nestle, Britannia, and Dabur.

    Data

Fight against economic colonization of domestic market

While growth rate for most Indian FMCG companies ranged between 8-12%, Patanjali posted Rs. 10,216cr in sales in 2016-17, a jump of over 100% from Rs. 5,000cr in 2015-16. Ramdev said his fight against economic colonization of domestic market would continue.

    Restaurant Business

Can Patanjali challenge MNC restaurant chains?

Following the FMCG success, Patanjali is considering venturing into the restaurant business to challenge MNC restaurant chains like KFC, McDonald's, and Subway.

Baba Ramdev said they are working on the business plan and branding and would enter the segment very soon.

He added, "Don't be surprised if you find one day that Patanjali restaurants are serving nutritious and safe food in your neighborhood."

    Bull Power

Experiment involves a leading Indian MNC

Patanjali's experiment reportedly involves a leading Indian automobile MNC and a Turkish partner.

They have designed a prototype that is being tweaked to produce more power.

Balkrishna said male bovines are increasingly being slaughtered and they want to change the perception that bulls aren't very valuable.

He added in the morning bulls can be used in farming and in the evening for electricity generation.

    Quote

    Back to the basics

Acharya Balkrishna stated: "We need to go back to the basics. In ancient times, bulls were used to ferry massive artillery. If their power is put to optimum use with the help of technology, they can be of tremendous use."

    Design

Yielded nearly 2.5 kilowatts of power

The design, involving a turbine, has yielded nearly 2.5 kilowatts of power so far.

The project aims to produce a design that can be provided to farmers, who already own bulls for generating power so that the generated power can be stored easily.

The research on bull power is being conducted by Patanjali at its sprawling headquarters in Haridwar.
