    What's the story

Mahindra Aerostructures, an arm of Mahindra Group, has forged an agreement with french company Segnere SAS to collaborate on airframe manufacturing.

In a release, the company said the partnership will help Mahindra group expand its production capabilities in hard metal parts (titanium, inconel and aerospace steels) among other technologies.

Mahindra is looking to utilize government's focus on encouraging local manufacturing of defence equipment.

    Information

60% of India's defence requirements met through imports - PM

In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that local production of defence equipment was in the heart of the 'Make In India' campaign. He also said India will require about 2 lakh skilled people in the defence and aerospace industry in 10 years.

    Signatories

    Details about the deal signatories

Mahindra Aerostructure is owned by the USD 17.8 billion Mahindra Group. It operates a 25,000 square metre manufacturing facility near Bengaluru that exports detailed parts, sub-assemblies and primary structural components worldwide.

Segnere SAS specializes in producing hard metal parts and assemblies. It operates three production facilities in France and a subsidiary in Tunisia. The company is headquartered in Tarbes near Toulouse in southern France.

    Advantage

Advantages of the deal to the parties

Segnere will help Mahindra venture into the french market while Mahindra offer opportunities to collaborate in the larger global marketplace. They may also collaborate on other technologies.

Mahindra's strategy to grow in the defence sector has been mostly inorganic. Over the last two years, the group has forged several alliances with global engineering and technology firms to expand its capabilities in the defence business.

    Information

What will they manufacture in collaboration?

Mahindra Aerostructures and Segnere SAS will together manufacture airframes. An airframe is a mechanical structure that generally includes fuselage, wings and undercarriage in an aircraft. It does not include the propulsion system. An airframe to an aircraft is what bones are to the human body.
