Maruti Suzuki declines launch of Swift Sport, RS in India

Maruti Suzuki has unveiled the fourth-generation Swift in India, but has confirmed that there will be no introduction of performance-oriented versions like Swift Sport or Swift RS.
This information was shared by Maruti Suzuki's sales and marketing head, Partho Banerjee, during a discussion with Autocar India.
Banerjee cited low sales volume of sporty models as the reason for their non-viability for launch.
Official stance
Swift's popularity doesn't require a brand shaper
Banerjee further explained that the existing popularity of the Swift in India does not necessitate a brand shaper.
Internationally, Suzuki Swift often introduces faster variants, such as the third-generation Swift Sport with a 140hp, 1.4-liter turbo-petrol engine and 48V mild-hybrid technology.
However, despite these enhancements to boost its sporty appeal, Banerjee stated, "The Swift is [already] very sporty. When you experience it, I don't think you'll ask for a turbo."
No turbo-engine
Turbo-petrol engine not planned for Swift in India
Despite Maruti Suzuki having already localized the 100hp, 1.0-liter, Boosterjet turbo-petrol mill for the Fronx in India, Banerjee ruled out its use in the Swift.
This decision may have been influenced by the lukewarm market response to Maruti's previous introduction of a turbo-petrol variant of its premium hatchback, the Baleno RS.
In some markets like New Zealand, this engine is used in the outgoing hatchback model known as Swift RS.
Complications
Importing sportier Swift model faces challenges
Regarding the possibility of importing a sportier Swift Sport, complications arise as a faster version of the fourth-generation Swift, has not been launched in any market yet.
There's no information on when a Sport variant will be available for this new car.
However, if such a variant is introduced internationally, Maruti Suzuki could potentially import up to 2,500 units under the Indian government's policy, that allows such imports without the need for homologation.
